Well skaters, I guess you could say, "Another One Bites The Dust".

Although we had a great time at this years Golden Gate Games, it will probably be the last one according to event organizor Scott Thompson. With absolutely no skate sponsors and his title sponsor dramatically reducing their promotions budget, Scott says he can no longer present the Golden Gate Games.

The turn out of skaters didn't help. There were only about 20 skaters that showed up at the Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park on a chilly but decent morning. Those who did make to the event put on an awesome display of skating before the groups of soccer players and their families who watch the races with great interest. We had a great time and the energy level was definitely high, but one could only wonder about the future of skating.

This situation reminded me of the three years Kristi Yamaguchi tried to pump up inline skating with her "Kristi Yamaguchi Skates in the Park" events. The had Scott Hamilton, Brian Boitano and Peggy Flemming on inline skates. They even had Ronnie Lott and Lynn Swan rollin' with the 49er Cheerleaders. They had Mervyns, Dayton-Hudson and Franklin Templeton as sponsors and hardly any support from the skate industry. It was as if the industry wants these events to fail.

Scott and his wife is moving on to recover from their financial losses, but our sport may not. There are fewer and fewer races and events out there. People are redirecting their energies towards more rewarding endeavors. I am feeling like gates are wide open and I am the only maniac refusing to leave the asylum.

If you love skating like I do, JUST HANG IN THERE!!! There's ups and downs in everything and we are going to make it through these hard times. See how you can make things happen at the skaters' meeting on June 14 at the Silver Rose Winery the day before the Calistoga Roadskate.
