It's been 14 years since
Greg's tragic death. Skaters will honor him on Sun. Apr. 9 at
Canada Road in San Mateo. |
Greg Levien, one of San Francisco's
best in-line skaters, died on Friday, May 1, 1992 in a hiking accident in San Francisco. A
former member of the Golden Gate Park Skate Patrol, Greg Levien had earned the reputation
of being among the top inline skaters on a national level. He participated in three
skate-a-thons from San Francisco to Los Angeles in the "Skate Against Crack and
Violence" in 1989, 1990 and 1991. He won second place in the longest skate race in
the world from Fresno to Bakersfield (April, 1991, 138 miles in 9 hrs. 34 min.)
Greg also won the overall championships in the
Kryptonics California Championship Series two years in a row (1990, 1991) scoring over 450
points in 1991 in sprint racing, distance racing, high jump, long jump, and downhill
slalom. Greg won the 1991 Cinco de Mayo skate race, the Mt. Tam Hill Climb in 1990 and
1991 and finished among the top in many other races and competitions. He was definitely
the athlete who could do it all.
History will look back at
Greg Levien as one of the true pioneers of our sport. His will to win, his enthusiasm, and
fierce competitive spirit will live on the hearts and minds all the people who knew
him. The California Outdoor |
